Barbara grew up in Omaha, NE. She graduated from Central High School before receiving her BS degree in Home Economics from Iowa State College in Ames. Her first job took her to Chicago, IL where she was a comparison shopper for Sears, Roebuck & Co. She married Bob Bruce October 11, 1947, and moved with him to Wiesbaden, West Germany where he served in the Office of Military Government working to rebuild Germany after WWII. Their oldest daughter, Jan, was born while stationed there. Returning stateside, they settled in Albert Lea, MN where they raised their family which included Jim, Jean, John and Joanne. Besides family, which she was most proud of, she enjoyed bridge, golf, PEO, coffee clubs, knitting, sewing, shopping, reading, traveling, and was always a strong advocate of exercise. In retirement, Barb and Bob moved to San Antonio, TX in 1986 where they loved the military community and the opportunity to golf on many different courses. She was an avid golfer and had not one, but TWO holes in one during her lifelong golf career! In 2003, they moved to Pacific Springs Village in Omaha, where Barb has resided for 22 years. At the time of Bob’s death in 2012, the two of them had been married almost 65 years.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W. Bruce; parents, Dr. Wm Douglas and Georgia Carey Burns; brothers and spouses George (Elly) Burns and Wm Douglas (Meredee) Burns, Jr. Survived by children Jan (John) Crowther, Fullerton, CA; Jim Bruce, Ft Collins, CO; Jean (John) Hartwell, Omaha, NE; John (Mary) Bruce, Lewisville, TX; and Joanne (Paul) Jones, Anderson, SC; 11 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2 p.m. Monday at Pacific Springs Chapel, 805 S. 173rd Ct. Omaha, NE 68118. Family will gather later in the year for her inurnment at the Omaha National Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be given to Pacific Springs Memorial Fund.
