Wayne R Grupe

June 25, 1938 — December 26, 2024

Wayne R. Grupe, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully, leaving a legacy of love, dedication, and faith. He had struggled with Alzheimer's and Lewy Body Dementia for several years, but he continued to share his faith and enthusiasm for life with those around him.

Wayne was born and raised in Beatrice, Nebraska where he graduated from Beatrice High School as Valedictorian. He pursued higher education at Valparaiso University, earning a degree in Engineering, which became the foundation for a distinguished career as a civilian with the Naval Facilities Engineering Command in Washington, DC. Throughout his professional life, Wayne was known for his expertise, leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence.

Immediately after moving to the DC area in 1960, Wayne became very active in Christ Lutheran Church in Washington, DC, where over the 36 years he was a member, he served on the council or in committee chairman roles for about 30 years. He participated in everything from acting in Walther League plays [won Best Supporting Actor in a local contest], singing in choir, and serving as Synod delegate.

Wayne loved sports and music. He was a catcher throughout his baseball career on Little League & American Legion teams in Beatrice and the Navy’s fast pitch softball league in DC. He loved the Dodgers and was thrilled to have them win the pennant this year. He was also a dedicated Washington Redskin fan who attended nearly all their home games with season tickets as well as a couple of their Super Bowl appearances. Vocal music played a vital role for Wayne as he sang in choirs for over 81 years. His other singing experiences ranged from junior high musical to fraternity to barbershop quartets.

After retiring in 1996, Wayne and his wife, Mary, moved from the DC suburbs to Omaha. They shared a passion for traveling the world together visiting all seven continents. Their adventures provided cherished memories, deepening their bond, and enriching their lives. Wayne’s faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he held his family and friends in the highest regard. Those who were fortunate enough to call Wayne a friend knew his loyalty and kindness were unmatched.

Once in Omaha, Wayne quickly became active in St. Michael Lutheran Church joining the choir even before becoming a member. He served a term as President of the congregation as well as chairing multiple committees over the years. He volunteered as the Business Assistant for 12 years.

Wayne is survived by his loving wife of many years, Mary; his children Pamela Range in Omaha, Steven Grupe (Sandi) in Keller, TX, Nan Teut (Matthias) in Omaha, and David Huber (Maresa) in Martinsburg, WV; multiple grandchildren; a great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brothers, Larry in Macomb, MI, Steve in Pompano Beach, FL, and Mike (Deb) in St. Louis. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray and Lorna Grupe; his brother, James Grupe; and his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Grupe.

Wayne’s life was a testament to his faith, love, and dedication to those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will remain a source of comfort and inspiration.
